Just 30 to 40 minutes west of downtown Denver, Evergreen feels like a true mountain town while keeping the city within easy reach. Towering pines, a historic downtown and a beautiful lake at its heart make it one of the most sought-after foothill communities in Colorado. Here’s what to know if you’re thinking about living in Evergreen.
Where Evergreen is
Evergreen is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, about 19 miles west of Denver, at an elevation of roughly 7,200 feet. Most residents commute toward Denver or the west suburbs, using I-70 via Highway 74 or heading east down Bear Creek Canyon toward Morrison and Red Rocks.
Evergreen Lake and the outdoors
Evergreen Lake is the center of town life: paddleboarding and fishing in summer, and a favorite outdoor ice skating spot in winter. The area is surrounded by open space, including Elk Meadow Park, Alderfer/Three Sisters Park, Mount Falcon and Denver Mountain Parks such as Bergen Park. Hiking, mountain biking and wildlife (yes, elk in the neighborhoods) are part of daily life.
Downtown Evergreen and community
Historic downtown Evergreen along Bear Creek has local restaurants, galleries and shops, and the town hosts summer concerts, festivals and events throughout the year. It has a strong sense of community, and many families stay for generations.
Schools
Evergreen is served by Jefferson County Public Schools (Jeffco), and there are also private and charter options nearby. School boundaries can vary by address, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific home.
Homes in Evergreen
You’ll find everything from cozy cabins and 1970s mountain contemporaries to newer luxury homes on acreage, plus a few neighborhoods closer to town with smaller lots. Things to check when buying in Evergreen:
- Water and septic: Many homes use private wells and septic systems, so plan for well and septic inspections.
- Wildfire mitigation and insurance: Defensible space matters, and insurance availability and cost should be checked early.
- Radon: Common in the foothills and easy to test and mitigate.
- Driveways and winter access: Steep drives and private roads can make a big difference in snowy months.
