Buying a Home in Breckenridge, Colorado: A Local Guide

Snow-covered mountain town in winter like Breckenridge, Colorado

With its Victorian Main Street, gold-mining history and a ski resort rising right above town, Breckenridge is one of Colorado’s most beloved mountain towns. It’s a popular choice for full-time residents and second-home owners alike. Here’s what to know about buying a home in Breckenridge.

About Breckenridge

Breckenridge is the county seat of Summit County, founded in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. About 5,000 people live in town year-round, and the town sits at more than 9,600 feet in elevation. Most buyers coming from Denver drive about two hours via I-70 and Highway 9, depending on traffic and weather.

Skiing and year-round lifestyle

Breckenridge Ski Resort opened in 1961 and now spans several peaks along the Tenmile Range. In summer, the town fills with hiking, mountain biking, festivals and concerts, including performances by the National Repertory Orchestra. Winter events like Ullr Fest and the International Snow Sculpture Championships draw visitors from around the world.

  • Nearby towns: Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne and Keystone often offer lower prices and easy access to several ski areas.

What to know before buying
