Historic red brick building with a clock in a Colorado downtown like Littleton

Littleton offers a rare combination: a charming historic downtown, light rail to Denver, great parks and a true hometown feel. Just south of Denver, it’s a favorite for families and anyone who wants small-town character close to the city. Here’s what to know about living in Littleton, Colorado.

Location and commute

Littleton is about 9 miles south of downtown Denver and is the county seat of Arapahoe County, with about 45,700 residents (2020 census). Two RTD light rail stations, Littleton-Downtown and Littleton-Mineral, make commuting to Denver easy. Santa Fe Drive and C-470 connect you to the rest of the metro and the mountains.

Historic downtown

Main Street is the heart of Littleton, with locally owned restaurants, shops and historic buildings. The community comes together for events like the holiday Candlelight Walk and the Littleton Twilight Criterium bike race.

Parks and outdoors

The South Platte River trail runs through Littleton, and Hudson Gardens offers beautiful gardens and summer concerts. Chatfield Reservoir lies just southwest of the city for boating, swimming and hiking, and the foothills are a short drive away.

Schools

Most of Littleton is served by Littleton Public Schools, with small areas in other districts including Jeffco and Douglas County. Many homes with a “Littleton” mailing address are actually outside city limits, so always confirm schools and jurisdiction for a specific address.

You’ll find mid-century ranches and bungalows near downtown, established neighborhoods from the 1970s and 1980s, and newer homes and townhomes in the surrounding areas. Older homes often have larger lots and mature trees; plan inspections accordingly, including the sewer line.
