Families moving to the Denver area usually want the same things: more space, good schools, parks close by and a reasonable commute. The good news is that the metro area has many suburbs that deliver. The right one depends on where you work, what kind of home you want and how you like to spend weekends.
South metro: close to the Tech Center
- Highlands Ranch: a large planned community with recreation centers, trails and open space throughout. Popular with families who want consistency and amenities.
- Centennial: established neighborhoods with mature trees, served by Cherry Creek and Littleton school districts depending on the address.
- Lone Tree: newer homes, light rail access and Park Meadows nearby.
- Parker: a lively Mainstreet, newer neighborhoods and miles of trails.
- Castle Rock: more space and newer master-planned communities between Denver and Colorado Springs.
West and north: close to the foothills
- Littleton: a historic downtown and established neighborhoods with easy access to parks and trails.
- Lakewood: a wide range of homes and quick trips to the mountains.
- Arvada: Olde Town charm, commuter rail to downtown and newer communities with mountain views.
- Golden: a small-town downtown with trails and Clear Creek at the doorstep.
Luxury options
Cherry Hills Village and Greenwood Village offer larger lots, custom homes and a short drive to both downtown and the Tech Center.
How to choose
- Start with your commute. Test the drive at rush hour, or look at light rail and commuter rail access.
- Confirm the school district for each address. District lines do not always follow city lines, so check the specific home.
- Compare the full monthly payment. HOA dues and metro district taxes in newer communities can change the math a lot.
- Visit on a weekend. Parks, pools and main streets show you how a community really lives.
- Think about resale. Homes near parks, trails and good schools tend to stay in demand.
